Since World War I, challenge coins have been upheld as treasured symbols of an unbreakable bond. During the first World War, a lieutenant had custom challenge coins minted for all those in his unit as a symbol of loyalty. Narrowly escaping the Germans, a pilot in this unit, with no identification or dog tags, produced his challenge coin to French soldiers and they spared his life. That inspired the others in this pilot's unit to always carry their challenge coins. These coins have served to remind groups, teams and units of their common goals, dedication and allegiance.

Today, custom challenge coins continue to do the same for many groups including military units, sport teams and schools.While they still represent a tight bond between members of military units, their popularity has spread to other teams and clubs. Recognizing that challenge coins build team spirit, preserve unity and encourage stronger ties; many other organizations have begun issuing custom challenge coins to bolster these traits. Challenge Coins can also serve as commemorative coins to honor acheivements, anniversaries and other milestones.
